Hematologic Malignancy Center
Trusted Medical Professionals
The Hematologic Cancer Center at Seoul National University (SNU) Cancer Hospital provides comprehensive care for hematologic malignancies, including acute and chronic leukemia, multiple myeloma, malignant lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative neoplasms, as well as a broad range of hematologic disorders such as aplastic anemia, deficiency anemias, hemolytic anemia, hemophilia, venous thromboembolic disease, and other bleeding and thrombotic disorders.
To provide effective treatment for hematologic cancers and disorders with complex clinical characteristics, the Hematologic Cancer Center collaborates closely with leading specialists across related disciplines to achieve optimal clinical outcomes. Accurate diagnosis and assessment of treatment response are of paramount importance, and the Center works in close cooperation with the Departments of Laboratory Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, and Pathology. It is also equipped with some of the nation’s foremost facilities, including a blood bank, cellular immunology laboratory, genetic testing facilities, and a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation unit. These resources enable the Center to provide highly specialized treatments such as blood- and cell-based therapies, therapeutic apheresis, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, including cord blood and haploidentical transplantation. In addition, personalized cancer treatment is provided using clinical genomic testing for hematologic malignancies, which forms an essential foundation for precision medicine.
A World-Class Research-Oriented Hospital
Research on molecularly targeted therapies and cellular therapies for hematologic malignancies has expanded rapidly in recent years, accompanied by a sharp increase in clinical trials involving novel drugs and technologies. In response to these advances, the Hematologic Cancer Center at SNU Cancer Hospital is leading research in hematologic cancer treatment by conducting clinical trials of innovative anticancer agents and cellular therapies, including first-in-human trials.
The Center is also actively engaged in cancer genomics research, which provides the foundation for personalized treatment. Since 2013, it has participated in the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), the world’s largest global collaborative initiative in cancer genomics, as an institution responsible for genomic research in hematologic malignancies. Having established itself as a world-class research-oriented hospital, the Hematologic Cancer Center also considers it a key mission to expand opportunities for patients with relapsed or refractory hematologic malignancies to participate in clinical trials and gain access to novel drugs and cellular therapies that may offer clinical benefit when conventional treatments are limited.
Extensive Experience in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
As of 2017, the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Center at SNU Cancer Hospital had performed more than 2,000 hematopoietic stem cell transplants, establishing itself as the leading transplantation center in Korea. The Center has accumulated extensive experience not only in autologous transplantation and sibling or unrelated donor transplantation, but also in highly complex procedures such as second hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, haploidentical transplantation, cord blood transplantation, and cell-selected transplantation.
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a potentially curative treatment that can offer hope even to patients with relapsed or refractory hematologic malignancies. At the same time, it is a high-risk treatment that requires a well-organized transplantation infrastructure and substantial clinical expertise. The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Team at SNU Cancer Hospital is equipped with both.
