[Clinical Departments] Department of Genomic Medicine

Department of Genomic Medicine

Establishment of the Department

The Department of Genomic Medicine at Seoul National University Hospital was established in March 2021 to advance precision medicine through genomics and big data.

About the Department

Precision medicine is an advanced approach to healthcare that uses individual characteristics and genetic information to diagnose diseases and provide optimal treatment tailored to each patient. Since the early 2000s, advances in genomic analysis technologies have enabled genomic test results to be put to a wide range of clinical uses. Significant progress has been made particularly in precision oncology and the diagnosis of rare diseases, and these advances are expected to rapidly expand across healthcare, including chronic disease management and disease prevention.

Our Goals

The Department of Genomic Medicine was established to proactively respond to this evolving paradigm in healthcare and to bring greater consistency to genomic testing and related clinical care, which had previously been handled separately and inconsistently across multiple departments.

The Department also conducts a broad range of research, including cancer genomics, the diagnosis and investigation of disease mechanisms in rare diseases, and the development of gene therapies and novel therapeutics. By training healthcare professionals with expertise in genomics, the Department aims to lead the advancement of next-generation medicine.
